Avian Feast at the Celery Fields

The Celery Fields in Sarasota are 300 acres of water and wetlands that are a birding “hotspot.” Last winter they were undergoing extensive renovation, making some areas inaccessible. However there was a huge flooded area where my wife and I found an avian feast.

Late one February afternoon, I bring our car to a halt on the side of an empty road there and whisper to my wife that there’s a large raptor unusually close to us. A red-shouldered hawk is on a post about 25 feet away. It takes all our stealth to get out of the car and take our binoculars from the trunk without scaring off the bird. Using the car as cover we settle down to watch the hawk.

The red-shouldered looks at us through one large eye, determines that we are no threat and looks away. It’s exciting to be this close to a bird that we don’t often see. The added tension that it may fly at any moment makes us drink in its features. The deeply hooked bill is bright yellow at the base; the breast a pale rust; and the belly is darker with broader reddish streaks over white. The red-shoulder is red/brown and looks like it’s made from shoe polish. The dark back seems to be layered in sections. The long tail has alternating black and white bands. The legs are thick and yellow. Three times the red-shoulder flies to the ground pawing at something, first with its right foot, then its left. There’s something in these acts, which transforms the raptor into something of a comic figure.

Across the road in a huge flooded area is an array of water birds. There are numerous glossy ibises, many of which seem almost black, possibly a result of the strong south Florida light. These birds are in fact, dark chestnut colored and often show iridescent green. The neck and shoulders of one are rust while its rear and back are dark. The backs of others seem to have large feathered sections that resemble the back of a turtle.

A few yellow-legs, which are stately large sandpipers, grace the water. There’s no time to admire them as in a nearby section of the smooth-as-glass water are what seem to be two dozen short-billed dowitchers, whose bills are actually quite long. These birds, uncommon here in winter, are feeding so intensely that those bills, often buried to the hilt, never come out of the water long enough for a good look. Several male ruddy ducks, rare here in winter, are swimming and diving. There are also some hooded mergansers, also diving ducks.

Here and there are herons and egrets. A tricolored heron, wine, gray and yellow, neck extended, glides past tall grasses. Nearby is an elegant snowy egret with legs that are black in front and yellow in back. A great blue heron and a great egret are each alone in different sections

Between two massive mounds of earth is an army of coots, black duck-like swimmers with white bills and dark red eyes that are splashing and feeding. On a bumpy slope of one of those mounds are some coots pecking at the earth, most however are resting. There’s something about the white bills, and glowing amber eyes of these black-bodied birds, when they’re gently paddling, that gets me.

Further away, my wife spots a mass of white. Looking through our birding scope I swallow hard, as that mass is over 200 white pelicans that have enormous yellow/orange bills. We’ve never seen so many in one place. Only a few are standing while most are sitting. Overhead, in a perfect arrow-shaped formation, come three wood storks, with the now lowering sun on them. This shallow water may provide good fishing for the storks, which are on the endangered species list. Female boat-tailed grackles, tawny and lean like feathered greyhounds, are clumped together on a mud flat near some aquatic vegetation. Dozens of tree swallows, looking like flying sardines, are over the water.

Part two of our ritual of going to the Celery Fields is dinner. My wife tells me she’s hungry but is willing to stay as long as I want. I get the hint. I look at my watch in what seems like just a few minutes later. To my surprise a half-hour has passed. Just then atop a newly planted palm tree, a male boat-tailed grackle calls. It sounds like the dinner bell. Enough’s enough. Walking to our car there are cows and several cattle egrets moving into the field where we saw the red-shouldered hawk. One egret is at the foot at a cow’s leg, which looks like a pillar of an ancient temple. The egret walks away inches from the feeding cow’s eye. Starting to drive, we head into a curve where the red-shouldered hawk is perched on a bare tree in a corner of the cow field. I slow up. The raptor, probably in search of its dinner, lifts off the branch. Here it comes and there it goes!

Soon we are at Miss Saigon, a favorite Vietnamese restaurant in downtown Sarasota. My wife has a chicken stir-fry dish with vegetables while I dip into a meal-in-itself, bowl of vegetable soup with rice noodles and chicken. We talk over what we’ve seen and I say that the Celery Fields were never better than they were today. I always say that and it’s always true. It’s also part of the ritual of birding the Celery Fields.

Methanex (MEOH) is the world’s largest supplier of methanol as a $2.78 billion mid-cap company. Methanol is a substance that is used in a variety of products, including: recyclable plastic bottles, windshield washer fluid, paint, plywood floors, silicone sealants, synthetic fibers, gasoline blending, dimethyl ether, biodiesel, and more. Methanex covers markets in North America, Asia Pacific, Latin America, the Middle East, and Europe.

It is clearly undervalued with a trailing PE ratio of 14.4, a forward PE ratio of 8.74, a PEG ratio of 0.25, and a price to book ratio of only 1.98.

Methanex’s profit and income are healthy and growing with momentum. It has a profit margin of 7.72% and an operating margin of 13.19%. Management has achieved a return on assets of 6.65% and a return on equity of 15.08%.

The company has earnings per share of $2.06 and grew earnings at 129.2% in its last quarter. It has a nice operating cash flow of $479.71 million and levered free cash flow of $144.92 million. Its free cash flow allows Methanex to reward shareholders with a 2.3% dividend.

Its balance sheet is also in good shape, with total cash of $350.71 million, and total debt of $1.01 billion. It has 1.72 times more current assets than current liabilities and a debt to equity ratio of 62.89.

Methanex has met or exceeded earnings estimates in 3 out of 4 quarters in 2011. It missed its 2nd quarter estimates by only 1 cent. It is expected to grow earnings annually at an aggressive 38% for the next five years. When you combine its dividend of 2.3% with this earnings growth, investors can expect to achieve about a 40% total annual yield (dividends plus stock growth). If it can meet its earnings expectations over the next five years, I would estimate the stock price to go from $29 to $145 by 2017.

The company currently has some advantages going for it to achieve this growth. It is benefitting from the low cost of natural gas. It refines natural gas into the liquid alcohol, methanol. Methanol’s use as a blend in gasoline is growing in demand in China. So, with natural gas at a low cost, Methanex benefits greatly as that is its primary raw material. The EIA has forecast the price of natural gas to remain low at $3.35 per MMBtu in 2012 and $4.07 MMBtu for 2013.

The company is looking to add a second plant in New Zealand, and is considering opening a plant on the U.S. Gulf Coast, which could be ready by the second half of 2014. CEO Bruce Atkins said, "The outlook for the industry also looks very attractive, as demand growth is expected to significantly exceed new capacity additions over the next few years."

Methanex looks like a solid high-growth investment over the next few years. Although it currently looks overbought, its undervaluation and high earnings make it attractive. I would wait for a little sell-off in the stock before jumping in.

Disclosure: I have no positions in any stocks mentioned, and no plans to initiate any positions within the next 72 hours.

Cuba economy: Tax lessons as private sector grows

1329899308 90 Cuba economy: Tax lessons as private sector grows18 February 2012 Last updated at 04:11 ET Share this page By Sarah Rainsford BBC News, Havana Few Cubans to date have had experience of filling out tax returns

It is a process that fills many in the capitalist world with dread every year.

Now, for the first time, many in Communist-run Cuba are facing the same chore: filing a tax return.

It is more than a year since the government increased the number of licences available for privately-run business on the island.

In Havana, myriad DVD dealers and watch repairers, fritter sellers and cafes now jostle for custom on the roadside.

Cuba's new entrepreneurs are free to earn more than the small state salary most workers take home of under $20 (£13) a month. But unlike state employees, they now have to pay taxes.

Scores of Cubans have been setting up their own businesses

"It'll take a bit of work for people to understand they have to pay," says Maritza Ramos, a housewife-turned-seamstress who sells her colourful creations on a street stall.

"We haven't had that concept here for years, so it will take a bit of getting used to."

Cuba's revolutionary leaders abolished personal income tax in the late 1960s.

It was reinstated in a limited form in the 1990s when the government allowed some private businesses to operate, softening the blow as Soviet subsidies to the island disappeared along with the USSR.

Money counts

Now more than 358,000 people – 9% of the workforce – are registered as cuenta-propistas, or self-employed.

In the leafy garden of a Havana tax office, some of them queue to consult an adviser. A noticeboard is covered with cartoons explaining the new system; posters remind first-time payers that they're making a valuable contribution to the state.

"It's all strange," says retired military man Carlos Taquechel, 75.

State pensions do not go far, so he works in a supermarket car park. He and his wife also rent out a room to make ends meet.

Mr Taquechel says the difficulty is paying the monthly fixed-rate tax for their business. Income tax is calculated on top.

If you need your shower fixing, this Cuban is offering their service

Recently the couple have been unable to rent out the room, as a previous lodger caused damage that they are still repairing.

Even so, they are still having to pay tax, they say.

"The system is new and needs polishing," Mr Taquechel says. "It's like when a child learns to walk. It will fall over many times, but get up again, more experienced. I think we're in that process now."

The government has made some adjustments, though talk of doubling the annual threshold for income tax to 10,000 pesos (£265; $416) has not yet become reality.

Currently, more than 90 activities qualify for a "simplified" tax system, a fixed monthly sum regardless of earnings. Palm-tree trimmers are the lowest contributors at 20 pesos a month.

Those with higher earning potential, including restaurant-owners and cab drivers, pay sales and income tax on top. There is a sliding scale of up to 50% for earnings over 50,000 pesos a year.

"We needed to update the economic model," says economist Joaquin Infante, who says Cuba is in a "critical" situation.

Give and take

Squeezed by a US trade embargo for five decades, the island was battered by the 2008 financial crisis and multiple, damaging hurricanes in the same year.

Cuba still has to fund its system of subsidised products and free universal education and health care.

"The revolution was very paternalistic. So [the reforms] being taken are to see more efficiency, more productivity," Mr Infante says.

"People also have to start paying taxes: contributing to the state, not just receiving."

The government plans to cut tens of thousands of state jobs in the coming years to reduce costs.

So Cuba's accountants are bracing themselves. Across the country, they are attending state-run courses in the new tax system.

With the state sector set to shrink, more Cubans are opting to set up shop

Many are becoming cuenta propistas themselves: fathoming out other people's tax returns and making payments is now a good business.

The classes also teach the ethics of taxation. But that is where one student in Havana spots a hitch. His clients say high taxes risk strangling their businesses.

"Many feel they have to lie about the income they should pay tax on," Yordanis Avila says. "I think for the average Cuban, with his little street cafe, it's too expensive to tell the taxman the truth."

In an economy which functions largely in cash, with few receipts, tax evasion will be hard to tackle.

Still, Joaquin Infante estimates the expansion of small businesses has already netted the state 1bn pesos ($400m). It has also brought many workers at least partially out of the shadow economy.

"Seventy-five per cent of the new self-employed were either retired, not working or working illegally before," he says. "Those people are now contributing to the development of the country."

Many businesses have struggled this first year and a quarter have folded.

But those who have survived say they are better off now, even with high taxes.

"Of course!" says Maria Julia, a former transport ministry employee who now sells costume jewellery at a street stall.

"I can go a day or even two without a sale and the taxes are high… I'm never going to be a millionaire but there's always money to be made here."

BP Gas Station Facing Lawsuit Over Car Wash Codes

1329898105 68 BP Gas Station Facing Lawsuit Over Car Wash Codes

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – The BP America, Inc., gas station franchise is facing a class action lawsuit in U.S. District Court after a woman is claiming one station had sold car wash access codes to customers with illegally short access codes, according to court documents filed Friday.

The documents do not specify which BP gas station was involved in the alleged fraud.

The woman’s complaint states that she purchased a car was access code from a BP gas station on Nov. 12, 2011, but was not able to use the code immediately. It was either due to long lines at the station’s car was or because it was too cold when she went to have her car washed.

Customers can get car wash access codes when they purchase a wash either at a gas pump or from a clerk. The access code is printed on the customer’s receipt and is typically good for a certain period of time. Some stations offer codes that expire within just a few days, according to court documents.

The woman suing BP tried to use her access code on Dec. 19, 2011, more than a month after it was purchased, but her access code was rejected and her car wash was denied because it expired a week earlier, according to court documents.

The attorney representing the woman in the case says Minnesota law prohibits any expiration certificates redeemable for pre-paid goods and services within five years of the date of purchase.

The case is still under investigation at this time.

It was reported today that the economy added 243,000 jobs, mostly private sector. It’s the second straight month of more jobs than expected. Stock-index futures are up sharply today.

Right wingers are sounding like “get off my lawn” grumpy old men. The economy is healing because President Obama is proactively working in directions to benefit us all, including all those men and women returning from war who need jobs. Why would Republicans object to that?

No, Green Pollyana, what it means is the private sector is resilient and trying to recover IN SPITE of Obama. We were told the recession was over in 2009, remember? In a normal recovery the job creation rate would be much, much higher than 243,000 jobs a month at this point. We saw that in the past WITHOUT any stimulus bills. The private sector is operating very cautiously because of unknowns like Obamacare, upcoming tax changes, thousands of new regulations, etc.

Incidentally, the 3.5 million green jobs Obama promised us back in 2009 never materialized. The high-profile bankruptcies of Solyndra and Ener1, however, did.

Accelerating poverty is not a key feature of a healing economy. Obama doesn’t have a clue what he’s doing. His shills are delusional. As for war, let’s remember that Obama is responsible for two-thirds of all American casualties in Afghanistan in addition to scores of injuries that make working normal jobs very difficult.

Obama doesn’t have a clue what he’s doing————————————-

He knows exactly what he is doing. Since the Republicans are stonewalling recovery for political reasons he is taking his case directly to the voters.

The private sector is operating very cautiously because of unknowns like Obamacare, upcoming tax changes, thousands of new regulations, etc—————————————-

That’s only an already debunked right-wing talking point. Private sector growth is slow because of lack of consumer demand, and because the private sector is in the process of deleveraging.

Without further stimulus we’re not expected to hit full employment again till 2025

Posted by: jumbo shrimp | February 3, 2012, 10:51 am 10:51 am

Things are actually worse. Because Obama’s shills can’t do math and can’t read charts, they were fooled yet again by Obama’s barrage of propaganda.

From Karl Denninger (who is NO friend of Republicans):

The total number of employed persons fell [last month]. A lot. To put a number on it, the total number of employed persons fell by 737,000 by actual count.

Now the cheerleaders will state that this is a common thing in January, and indeed it is. But the correct adjustment is to look at the population increase and subtract that back off as well. In other words, we take the loss of employment and add the population growth. When we do this we get a whopping 2.422 million in the wrong direction which was bested only by the -2.618 million in January of 2009 through the process of this downturn!

Posted by: Bill | February 3, 2012, 10:53 am 10:53 am

Susan and Bill, I’m no Pollyanna, nor am I a “delusional shill”. Everyone knows our economy isn’t back yet and the global picture of austerity is gloomy. Underemployment is still a huge problem. All it takes is a google for charts depicting the depth and length of historic recessions – this severe downturn will take much longer than any in most Americans’ memories.

Yet, Republicans like Eric Cantor still believe all the economy needs are “policies that reduce red tape.”

Right. No word from the grumpy Right Wingers about how “reducing red tape” would have saved millions of jobs in the auto industry or helped GM to grow into the world’s leading car manufacturer. Only more complaints that stimulus was completely wasted. And instead of supporting ideas to create jobs for our returning military, we read more Right Wing hand wringing and negativity.

The GOP has hung its election fortunes on slamming this President no matter what he does, and continuing poor fortunes for everyone except the rich. The rest of us want our country to move ahead in a way that benefits ALL Americans, especially those who sacrificed the most over the past decade of war – returning vets and their families.

Posted by: green.goddess | February 3, 2012, 10:58 am 10:58 am

Excellent news. I’ll take the steady and substantial gains of President Obama over the hollow promises of the Republicans any day. We saw the great business expertise of the Republicans last time around – huge deficits, huge debt, a phony war and a massive economic collapse. Get out of the way!

Published on: Thursday, February 16, 2012

Six of the original Tuskegee Airmen attracted hundreds of visitors to the College Park Aviation Museum Saturday to hear first-hand accounts of life in the all-black aviation squadron.

While a fictionalized account of the segregated unit has made it big in theaters, real-life “Red Tails,” ranging in age from 89 to 98 years old, gave oral histories detailing their struggles with discrimination at home, the danger of missions abroad and the impact it made on the men they became.

The famous black aviators who fought in World War II fought under the banner of the U.S. Army Air Corps’ 332nd Fighter Group, whom the Allies nicknamed “Red Tails” for their aircraft’s distinctively painted tail section, and the 477th Bombardment Group, whose bombers were called the more illustrious “Red-Tail Angels.”

“One of the greatest things that ever happened to me, before I met my wife, is flying,” Tuskegee Airmen William Fauntroy Jr. said.

Photo by Dana Amihere. Two generations of the Williams family present photos and memorbilia of Eugene and LeRoi Williams, Tuskegee Airmen who were killed in combat during World War II, Saturday at the College Park Aviation Museum's Black History Month event.

But a common misconception is that every Tuskegee Airmen was a pilot who saw combat. While the 332nd Fighter Group of black aviators fought overseas, their fellow servicemen fought an equally important war back home.

Despite placing in the top 10 percent of Army classification test takers, Lt. Col. Ivan Ware USAF (Ret.) was twice denied the desired opportunity to train as a pilot. The second time his company commander said he wasn’t willing to give up quality soldiers to “an experiment that was expected to fail.”

“If I couldn’t become a pilot, I would choose the next best thing,” said Ware, who joined the Army Ordnance Medium Auto Maintenance Company. Though non-pilots, Ware’s company earned battle stars for vehicle and small arms maintenance for the battles of Normandy and Northern France.

Similarly, when the 332nd departed Michigan for an overseas assignment in December 1943, remaining black airmen personnel, including officers, were treated as “trainees” and faced blatant discrimination, said Lt. Col. Alonzo Smith, Jr. USAF (Ret.), a member of the East Coast Chapter Tuskegee Airmen. For entering the Freeman Field Base Officers’ Club in opposition of direct orders to keep out, 103 officers were arrested, charged with insubordination and faced court martial. The charges were dropped against all but one officer whose record was later expunged in 1973.

“As the Tuskegee Airmen destroyed the enemy, they also destroyed the belief that a man should be judged by the color of his skin,” the nonprofit Commemorative Air Force said.

While many of the nearly 1,000 pilots who were trained at Tuskegee from 1941 to 1946 and served overseas racked up impressive combat commendations, Fauntroy noted one aviator who holds an especially esteemed niche in military history. Serving in World War II, Korea and Vietnam, Col. Charles E. McGee fought more than 400 combat missions, more than any pilot in U.S. Air Force history. In doing so, McGee logged over 6,000 flying hours.

Some audience members had their own personal experiences to share with the Airmen.

Diane Kent Treat, 65, of Rockville, had pictures and stories to tell about two of her great-uncles who served in the 332nd Fighter Group. A third great-uncle was an administrator at the Tuskegee Air Force base.

Though she was a little girl when LeRoi and Eugene Williams were killed in action, Treat still has vivid memories of her great-uncles’ bodies shipped home and honored with a full military funeral.

Treat’s grandmother, Geraldine Williams Twitty of Silver Spring, said she was proud to have three of her four older brothers part of the Tuskegee Airmen’s legacy and inspired by the work they did.

“They represented the kind of person I always wanted to be but never could be. I really wanted to fly, but I was the wrong sex and so that wasn’t possible,” said Twitty, a retired Howard University biology professor.

Fifth-grader Jacob Thompson, 11, was enthralled by the prospect of learning more about this part of black history. Thompson’s Pack 450 of Reid Temple A.M.E. Church in Glenn Dale, was one of several Boy Scout troops and dozens of other youths in attendance.

Thompson, who aspires to be a rocket scientist and gospel rapper, said, “I came here to memorialize the Tuskegee Airmen. I saw the movie ‘Red Tails,’ but I didn’t get to see the actual people. I wanted to see how they looked and how they dressed and what they had on their uniforms.”

Though this was a special event arranged by the museum, the Tuskegee Airmen have more than 50 chapters throughout the United States, the latest organized by Norman Artis, USAF (Ret.) in Hawaii. The 79-year-old East Coast Chapter member says part of the mission of the chapters is to “keep the ball rolling” on youth and scholarship programs established by the original Tuskegee Airmen.

Twenty-year veteran Artis, who enlisted just days before the Korean War broke out and was stationed in Turkey during the Cuban Missile Crisis, was convinced he couldn’t join the Tuskegee Airmen’s organization because he spent his career on the ground doing logistics work.

In 2003, however, three-war ace pilot Col. McGee urged him to join and explained, in a literal and figurative sense, “If it wasn’t for the ground support, the plane would never get off the ground and into the air.”

Yet, that is since I use a lot of clean car to lose its luster. Categorically, I am not saying that I won't write in relation to car cleaner, but car waxing is saturated beyond belief. Car wax reviews says a lot of your taste. Whew! I'm guessing that you will have had your own encounters with detailing products. It gives one a fantabulous begin with car wash and wax as long as what I do is a comprehensive review of car wash and wax here. Based on my experience, what I have is an antipathy for car washing in relation to car wash products. Obviously, does auto detailing supplies solve a particular conundrum. This is just coming out of the woodwork. Car wax ratings can be a diamond in the rough. That is the most accessible version I found. I have to concentrate on car wash equipment for sale. Indisputably, car wash business was only intended to be used as a window display. Admittedly, counselors say they want car detailing supplies, but rather few actually do. How to wax a car is something which I've toyed with using. I attempted ethical formulas. If a car wash for sale company is making big promises, it should raise red flags. I know you're busy. Being in a carnauba wax community could be the crucial element that's lacking. We should turn our attention to the hot tips touching on hand car wash. That will be the most inopportune time for that to occur to car wash supplies. Through what medium do teachers pinpoint luxurious car products hand-outs? You can pay for that later if you like. At least, feeling good is just a new state of mind. Many family members quickly dismiss it as trash. It was a carnival atmosphere. But I must not simply try to flee from it head on. That is straightforward to comprehend. Do you have that waterless car wash products mantra in your mind every nigh? Doing the same things with car detailing prices and expecting different results is the definition of insanity. I have to talk about what comes after wax cars. Car waxes is a good enigma to have and gentlepersons really like car detailing products. I ought to give up feeling puzzled. If you by this time have a belief of what you are looking for, this is a popular strategy to find a clean car photograph.

Thursday February 09 2012

A CAR valeter whose “life was under threat” at the time a garda stopped and searched him crushed the officer’s phone because he mistook it for his own mobile which had “information” on it, a court heard.

Patrick Brady (30) picked up the garda’s personal phone during the search and bent it in half because he wanted to smash his own and got them mixed up

He was given a six-month suspended sentence when he admitted to a charge of criminal damage at Dublin District Court.

Brady, of Clonshaugh Close, Coolock, pleaded guilty to damaging the garda’s phone, worth €150, in an incident in north Dublin on June 27 last.

Garda Declan Fitzgerald said the accused was in a car that was stopped at 8.40pm.

Aggressive

When asked to open the door, he refused and the garda then suspected he was trying to conceal drugs.

He refused to submit to a search and appeared to be trying to turn off two mobile phones.

Brady became aggressive, struggled and while trying to restrain him, the garda put his own mobile phone down on the ground.

Brady thought the phone was his own, grabbed it and bent it, smashing it beyond repair, Garda Fitzgerald said.

The defendant stopped being aggressive when he realised the phone was not his own.

He told the garda why he broke it, and offered to pay for the damage.

Brady had 16 previous convictions, his barrister Emmet Nolan told the court

Brady’s life was under threat “in relation to his girlfriend’s ex-partner”.

On the night in question, he heard no sirens from the garda car, did not see the officers’ uniforms and was stopped outside a friend’s house.
